Fruit Salad (practice)
Dear Kara,
You were her inspiration when she was five years old. One day as we were flipping channels I found your Kara's Kitchen, so I told her you were my friend from College. With a huge smile she asked me: you know someone on TV? The next day she decided to create her "cooking" show ;)
Here you'll find out how I deal with my recurrent retroperitoneal liposarcoma.

My Super-Surgeon and my Super Medical Student
This was filmed in July 2005, and Maya was only 4 years old. For about a week she had been asking me to take her along to my next appointment at Dana-Farber.
"I have to ask your doctor a question",
she would tell me every 10 minutes for days (if you know Maya you know I am not exaggerating).
So I made sure I brought her with me to the next appointment which was with my surgeon, Monica Bertagnolli. As soon as my super-surgeon walked in the room Maya asked:
"When I grow up, can I be a doctor like you?"
I will never forget that moment. Dr. Bertagnolli left the room and came back with a brown bag filled with medical supplies. Meanwhile I realized that I had my video camera with me and started filming.

first (50) days
Para ti Maya.
For Maya, who taught me to live
one hour at a time.
(Everyone knows that Maya is really spoiled by all of us...
this video, of her first 50 days, might reveal why we just can't help it).

Eu VOU BEM
quem nao VAI NADA BEM são as minhas células cancerosas que um dia destes levam um tiro no pé.
Images of my last scans, before and after last surgery, with music of two Brasilians that I love, Ana Carolina and Seu Jorge. This song (Serge Gainsbourg's Chatterton) repeats the phrase: Nao Vou Nada Bem, meaning, I am not doing well at all. Which is not my case, since I am doing well, EU VOU BEM. It is my cancer cells that are not doing well at all. One of these days, my great Dana-Farber team is going to find a drug that forces them to commit suicide.
(edited, this morning, in Windows Movie Maker,
while my friend Zazá took care of Maya)

Carolyn Charron, one of my nurses at the
Dana Farber, wrote this poem and Maya,
my six year-old daughter, loved it!
Study Buddy
Study Mouse, Study Mouse
Will this drug be the cure?
Will it kill off the cancer,
And my body restore?
Study Mouse, Study Mouse
In the lab, this drug worked for you
Here in the CRC, will it work for me?
Study Mouse, Study Mouse
Come help me cope,
Give me Strength
And Infuse me with hope.

To bring us good luck with our Phase-One treatments,
Carolyn makes these colorful mice.
